Chapter 12: Page 13 - Dreaming of Her

Seba and I had a lot of back and forth discussion on the colors on this page regarding color theory and symbolism and continuity and etc, so I hope you appreciate it ;)

You can see an alternate color version of it if you’re a supporter on Patreon, and even a GIF version swtiching between colors because Seba is awesome. And everyone, supporter or not, please take a look at this post to give me suggestions on non-art rewards I can give supporters :)

Yesyesyesyesyesyes… Tezin, meet Nightshade. Nightshade… welll, you know. Now sh*t is about to get real, folks! :-D

  • T.R.

Hmmmm. So a trained warrior-monk, with cat-like reflexes. But someone can get him to stand down by saying “Easy there, big guy.” I wonder if that factoid was in the data that Konstantin uploaded into SOPKA?

Also, Tenzin (still!) sleeps with a knife under his bed.

    • Speaking alone is proof you aren’t REALLY a dream monster, after all ;)

      • T.R.

Why pull a knife if you think it’s a dream monster?

        • Why indeed?

          • KBoysx1

What if it is a dream knife meant to kill the dream monster? Or it’s just the natural human instinct to want power, such as a weapon

        • DeNitro

Perhaps same reason my sweet wife startles from a nightmare to throw a pillow at a huge non existant spider,,,

      • Matt [in Middletown]

Just a program fragment squirreling away in the neural net nanobots in his head.
        Nothing serious.

    • DeNitro

Knife? Personally know of three vets that will sleep with a weapon IN THE BED the rest of their lives,,
One who’s wife gave him choice, move to quiet countryside or she’s leaving him after just two incidents.
She was not amused he could pull her to cover, flip the bed, then use the .45 from under his pillow to lay down cover fire, emptying three magazines through their third story apartment wall, all BEFORE he became fully awake. Simply because a vehicle backfire on the street below.

      • T.R.

Oops - that should have read “under the pillow”. Fixed

      • Yeah, PTSD is no fun, but we’re trying to show that a bit.

        • DeNitro

          You nailed that part,

Also on the “Easy there big guy” working.
Same fellow with .45, his wife finally found to not freak and scream, Instead quickly get closer to him, speak, and he would wake right up and stop.

          • T.R.

            Hi DeNitro,

I expect that what you described works when the speaker is known and trusted. The known voice likely registers on a subconscious level and their words are given priority. How would your friend react if someone with green glowing night-vision goggles was in his room when he woke up. (probably at least as severely as the response to the car backfire as ambient noise)

Conversely, Tenzin is a highly trained soldier, and can probably pretty quickly distinguish whether the visitor is in an attack posture or not - probably even before it registers in his conscious mind. And once he recognizes that they are not threatening him, he instinctively realizes he can drop down to “yellow alert”.

          • DeNitro

I’ll not pretend expertise on awaking subconsous with or without PTSD,
But I can say this from personal experience, wide awake in a moonless dark forrest,
When a loud beast starts tearing through the underbrush towards the camp,,
Only a known friendly voice will encourage one to remove finger from trigger and toggle safely…

          • NickDA

Also, he hasn’t dropped the knife… and since throwing it would be a bad idea, he’s still just about as guarded as he can be. He’s not in a position to jump her, so he’s more in a defensive posture IMO. Kinda a “at least they’re not gonna be able to smother me with a pillow”.

  • Does…does he actually sleep with an unsheathed knife under his pillow? That poor pillowcase must look like swiss cheese.

    • T.R.

It’s probably sheathed under there to avoid Tenzin waking up already shaved. Though I expect the sheath is secured under there, so that pulling the knife frees it from the sheath rather then just pulling out the sheathed knife. :)

And that’s impressive core strength to rise to a sitting position while brandishing the knife. Even if he’s able to use his leg against the bed for leverage.

      • *does a million sit ups*

      • KBoysx1

I imagine most Aegis soldiers have spoke sort of weapon within the reach of their bed. This is probably average in Aegis

    • Whichever makes you happier to imagine ;)

    • He’s not ok, and its not like he can unsheathe the knife if needed. Not many options for a paranoid, troubled, handicapped guy

  • Kaiden

I love this page! Very well done.

I’m a little surprised he’s got *only* a knife, though. I realize firearms are probably very controlled in Minerva, but he’s also quite resourceful.

    • He’s also under guard while on trial for war crimes, though ;)

      • Kaiden

Counter-argument! Aegis probably suspects Oculus goons might try to simply remove Tenzin if this doesn’t go their way, so they would probably arrange for him to get hold of something more dangerous than a knife. Not that knives aren’t dangerous in the right hands.

Of course, this scene might be them doing just that.

        • Counter COUNTER argument, there was a guard of each posted at the door ;P

          • KBoysx1

Counter Counter COUNTER argument, the goon could have killed the other guard and gotten inside, to attack Tenzin. Therefore he would nerd self defense

          • Pff, no self respecting Aegis soldier will get taken down by some Oculus GOON! … right?

          • T.R.

Geez, even Rick was able to get away from the Oculus goons and escape their little clubhouse.

          • Honza Prchal

            But … Rick’s so slick he’s sick!

          • KBoysx1

What if the Oculus soldier has special weapons and gear? For instance, an invisibility cloak/chameleon suit.

  • KBoysx1

Oh God! DA’s place on TWC has slipped to #198. *spams vote on all devices and WiFi networks*
